Unocal and Arco
in Burma(Myanmar)

Burma has been ruled by a military dictatorship, the State
Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC), since 1988, after brutally
suppressing massive, countrywide pro-democracy demonstrations.
In 1990, the SLORC annulled elections held in May of that year,
and placed the winning presidential candidate, Aung San Suu Kyi,
under house arrest until September 1995, when she was released
because of international pressure. However, Aung San Suu Kyi is
unable, by law, to play a role in Burma even today and the SLORC
continues to violate its citizens rights, through imprisonment,
torture, slave labor, and its war on ethnic minorities.
Several U.S. companies continue to do business with the SLORC,
especially Unocal. By providing hard currency to the ruling dictatorship,
they help to support repression of the Burmese people including
the forced labor of thousands of Burmese in the building of the
roads, pipelines, and railroads necessary to move the oil and
gas from the fields.
You can write to Unocal, requesting that they stop doing business
with the illegitimate Burmese dictatorship.

Success!
Pepsico, Arco and Texaco left Burma because of public pressure
and the threat of economic losses in the US and Europe as a result
of the boycott of its products.
We can have a similar impact on Unocal, and by not filling our
car tanks with Unocal gasoline.
